How do you make thick hair less poofy?

My hair is EXTREMELY thick and wavy. I love how my natural hair looks, but since it is very poofy and thick, I straighten it everyday. Now, my hair has an infinite amount of split ends and my hair seems way more dried out than it should be. I would like to start wearing my hair naturally. How can I make it less poofy?

one thing that you should NOT do is get it layered.

if you have thick hair then you should use a moisterizing conditioner that will weigh your hair down. getting it layered will cause it to become even more poofy.

i know this because i have poofy hair too. and getting layers was a huge mistake.

Buy a pair of thinning scissors and thin it out every week. Also, when you're at the salon, get the hair dresser to razor your hair. Then, every night when you go to bed, wear a beanie or something that will flatten your hair.

I've got poofy hair too. But I do like my natural waves. What I did was to rebond the top of my head only. The bottom half is still naturally wavy. I don't have to use the hairdryer or straightener no more! Au naturel!! No more frizz from all those appliances! Just wash and go! Awesome!

OMG, totally listen to juqe_bocks... or whatever. Getting my hair layered was a huge mistake. Before, it was already REALLY think and wavy and a little poofy, and I thought layering it would help to thin it out, but it totally made it even more poofy!!! It sucks really badly.

Good Luck! :)
